Samsung South Africa has introduced a new QR code payment feature, giving Galaxy smartphone users another way to pay for purchases without relying on physical bank cards.

The feature, called Scan to Pay, has been added to Samsung’s digital wallet and is designed to make checkout faster and more convenient. Samsung announced the rollout on August 28, positioning the service as an alternative payment option for consumers across South Africa.

Scan to Pay is provided through South African alternative payments company Scan to Pay, which has an extensive network of merchants and financial services integrations across the country. Samsung said the provider has “more than 600,000 acceptance locations across South Africa and over 19 million app inclusions across consumer banking, fintech and financial service provider applications.”

The partnership gives Samsung Galaxy users access to QR-based payments through their smartphones, allowing them to complete transactions by scanning compatible QR codes at participating merchants.

The move comes as digital and mobile payment methods continue to gain ground in South Africa, where consumers increasingly have access to alternatives to traditional card-based transactions. QR payments can provide merchants and customers with another way to complete purchases, particularly as smartphones become more deeply integrated into everyday financial activity.

For Samsung, the addition of Scan to Pay strengthens the payment capabilities available through its digital wallet while expanding the range of transaction methods accessible to Galaxy users.

The company’s decision to work with an established local payments provider also gives the service access to a broad acceptance network. With hundreds of thousands of locations already supporting Scan to Pay, Samsung users can potentially use the feature across a wide range of retail and service environments.

The rollout highlights the growing competition among technology companies and payment providers to make smartphones a central part of consumers’ financial lives. As digital wallets evolve beyond storing payment cards, features such as QR payments are becoming an increasingly important part of the mobile commerce experience.

For South African consumers, Samsung’s latest addition offers another digital route to completing everyday purchases, while the partnership expands the reach of QR-based payments within the country’s evolving digital payments ecosystem.
