South Africa is intensifying efforts to modernise public sector technology systems following a high-level meeting between Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi and newly appointed State Information Technology Agency (SITA) Managing Director Magatho Mello. The discussions focused on advancing the country’s digital government agenda and improving the delivery of technology-enabled public services.

The engagement underscored SITA’s central role in supporting government departments through secure and efficient ICT infrastructure. Officials highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between the agency and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies to ensure state systems are better equipped to meet citizens’ needs and support long-term economic growth.

Mello’s appointment is being viewed as an important step toward stabilising SITA after an extended period under acting leadership. He brings more than 20 years of experience in telecommunications and digital transformation, having held senior positions at companies including MTN Group, IBM and Vodacom.

Government leaders have increasingly prioritised digital transformation as part of broader plans to modernise state services, strengthen connectivity and improve efficiency across public institutions. Current initiatives include upgrading digital infrastructure, expanding cybersecurity capabilities and improving access to online government services, particularly in underserved communities.

Highlighting the urgency of building resilient digital systems, Malatsi recently warned that weaknesses in critical digital infrastructure could have widespread consequences. “If these systems are not resilient, they pose a foundational risk to our day-to-day lives,” the minister said in a recent government address.

The meeting also comes as South Africa advances broader digital initiatives, including efforts to strengthen artificial intelligence governance and modernise public sector systems. Analysts say improved coordination between the ministry and SITA will be essential to delivering reliable digital services and restoring public confidence in government technology platforms.

The renewed partnership between the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and SITA is expected to focus on improving service delivery, strengthening digital resilience and ensuring that government technology infrastructure can support South Africa’s long-term digital ambitions.
